Heimdallr the Watchman
Heimdallr is the god who guards the rainbow bridge Bifrost, the boundary between Midgard (the world of humans) and Asgard (the world of the gods). He is famous for his extraordinary senses—he can see and hear for hundreds of miles, and requires less sleep than any bird. Heimdallr embodies vigilance, boundary-keeping, and the sacred duty of protection.
Sacred Story
Heimdallr dwells at the foot of Bifrost with Gjallarhorn, a mighty trumpet that he will sound at Ragnarok (the end of the world) to wake all beings and call the gods to their final battle. He is the father of all social classes of humanity (through his encounters with the three women), and his name means “he who illuminates the world.” Heimdallr is ever watchful, standing guard against any chaos or intrusion into the Nine Worlds.
ADF Devotion
Heimdallr is invoked at the beginning and closing of ADF rituals as the guardian of the gates between worlds. He is honored by those who work security, law enforcement, and boundary-keeping work. In ADF practice, blót to Heimdallr asks his blessing for clear sight, sharp hearing, and vigilant protection. Offerings include ale or mead, declarations of one’s commitment to order and righteousness, and the sounding of a horn or bell to echo Gjallarhorn. Wednesday (Heimdallr’s Day) is sacred to him.
