Iðunn the Eternal
Iðunn is the Vanir goddess of youth and rejuvenation. She guards the golden apples that restore youth and vitality to the Aesir, keeping them vigorous and powerful. Without her apples, even the gods would age and weaken.
Sacred Story
Iðunn is the wife of Bragi, god of poetry. She was once tricked by Loki and stolen away by the giant Thrym, which caused the Aesir to begin aging rapidly without her apples. Heimdallr and Loki (in one of his rare helpful moments) retrieved her and brought her back, restoring the gods’ vitality. Her abduction and rescue illustrate the vital importance of maintaining renewal and cycles of regeneration.
ADF Devotion
In ADF practice, Iðunn is honored as a goddess of natural cycles, renewal, and self-care. She is invoked during times of transition and transformation, particularly spring and new beginnings. Offerings include fresh fruits and flowers, practices of physical renewal (exercise, healing), and mindfulness of the cycles of rest and activity that maintain vitality.
