Vali the Avenger

Vali is the god of vengeance and righteous retribution. Unlike chaotic revenge, Vali represents the swift and sure justice that responds to genuine wrongdoing. He was born for a specific purpose: to avenge the death of his brother Baldr.

Sacred Story

Vali was born to Oðinn and the giantess Rind specifically to avenge Baldr’s death at Loki’s hands. At only one day old, he was old enough to fight, and he slew Höðr (the blind god who threw the mistletoe spear that killed Baldr, though Loki manipulated him). This act of righteous vengeance prevented Baldr’s death from going unpunished, though it could not restore the beloved god to life.

ADF Devotion

In ADF practice, Vali is honored as a god of swift justice and righteous action against wrongdoing. He is invoked by those protecting the vulnerable from predators, those responding to injustice, and those committed to ensuring that wrongs do not go unpunished. Offerings include just action in response to genuine harm, protection of those who cannot protect themselves, and commitment to retribution that serves justice rather than mere anger.
