Blót to Bragi: Honoring Poetry, Music, and Eloquent Speech
Bragi is the god of poets, musicians, and all who work with the power of words. This ritual invokes his blessing for inspiration, creativity, and the ability to speak truth with beauty and power.
Preparation
Gather: A candle, water for libation, wine or mead (if possible), pen and paper or your instrument, honey (optional but traditional for Bragi)
Set your space: Light your candle at your altar or hearth. Have your offerings ready.
The Ritual
1. Grounding & Opening (2 minutes)
Stand or sit before your altar. Take three deep breaths.
“I kindle this fire and gather my thoughts. I am here, present, and open. I come to honor Bragi, god of poetry and song.”
2. Honoring the Earth Mother (1 minute)
Pour water into a bowl or onto the earth:
“Jörð, Mother of all, I stand upon your foundation. Receive my gratitude. Hold me steady as I honor the gods.”
3. Purification & Opening the Sacred Space (2 minutes)
Pass your hands through the candle’s smoke or sprinkle water on your forehead:
“I purify myself for this rite. Let all that is not of good intent depart. I open my heart and mind to the presence of the Kindreds.”
4. Honoring the Three Kindreds (3 minutes)
Ancestors:
“Ancestors of blood and spirit, I honor you. Poets and storytellers of old, grant me access to the deep wells of memory and wisdom you knew.”
Nature Spirits:
“Vættir of stream and forest, of wind and wild places, bless this rite. Inspire in me the quick wit and keen observation of the natural world.”
Shining Ones:
“Gods and goddesses, powers of Asgard and beyond, I honor you. Oðinn, wise and eloquent, grant me insight. Bragi, my honored guest, I call upon you now!”
5. Invocation of Bragi (3 minutes)
Speak directly to Bragi with conviction:
“Bragi, Poet of the Aesir! Golden-haired one who plays the harp! You who welcomes the noble dead to Valhalla with song and tale—I call upon you now.
Grant me the gift of words that ring true. Loosen my tongue to speak beauty into being. Let my voice carry the power to move hearts, to kindle courage, to preserve memory.
Bragi, god of inspiration, hear me!”
6. Offering (2 minutes)
Pour a libation of wine or mead, or eat honey as a symbolic offering:
“I offer you this mead/wine/honey, sweet and golden as your harp-song. Accept this gift as a token of my devotion and my hunger for inspiration.”
7. Personal Practice or Prayer (5-10 minutes)
Choose one or more:
- If you are a writer or poet: Read aloud a poem—yours or one you love. Let your voice honor Bragi.
- If you are a musician: Play an instrument or sing. Even simple humming is an offering to the Poet God.
- If you work with words: Speak your own prayer or petition, asking Bragi for aid in:
- Overcoming writer’s block
- Finding eloquent words in a difficult conversation
- Preserving a story or memory
- Bringing inspiration to your creative work
“Bragi, I offer you my effort and my intention. I dedicate this work to your honor. Grant me the clarity to know what wishes to be born through me. Guide my words, that they may carry truth and beauty.”
8. Closing (2 minutes)
“Bragi, I thank you for your presence and blessing. I honor you as patron of poets, musicians, and all who work with words and song. As this rite closes, your blessing remains with me. The words I speak today will carry your light. So be it!”
Extinguish the candle or let it burn as you continue your day.
After the Rite
In the hours and days following, pay attention to moments of inspiration, clarity, or eloquence. Write down insights. Speak truth when it matters. These are Bragi’s continued blessings.
If you are a regular practitioner, consider dedicating one day a week to creative practice as an ongoing offering to the Poet God.
