Blót to Frigg: Honoring the Mother, the Wise Queen
Frigg is the Queen of the Aesir, goddess of marriage, motherhood, family bonds, and the fates. This ritual honors her wisdom and seeks her blessing for the home, family unity, and the strength to navigate life’s turning points.
Preparation
Gather: Candle, water, wine or milk, bread or honey cakes, flowers (fresh or dried), thread or yarn
Set your space: Create a small altar or hearth space. Place fresh flowers if available.
The Ritual
1. Grounding & Opening (2 minutes)
“I kindle this fire for Frigg, Queen of the Aesir, wisest of all goddesses. I gather here in her honor.”
2. Honoring Jörð (1 minute)
“Jörð, I honor the ground beneath my feet, the dwelling that shelters my family. Receive my thanks for the security of home.”
3. Purification (1 minute)
Pass your hand through the candle’s flame (above the flame) or sprinkle water:
“I cleanse my heart and home. Only good intent and loving presence remain.”
4. Calling the Three Kindreds (3 minutes)
“Ancestors, I honor the lineage that flows through me. Grandmothers of wisdom, guide me as Frigg guides the fates.
Nature Spirits, vættir of this dwelling, bless this home and all who dwell within.
Shining Ones, powers of Asgard, I call upon Frigg!”
5. Invocation of Frigg (3 minutes)
“Frigg, All-Mother, Queen of the Aesir! You who know the secrets of all fates, yet speak not what is hidden. You who bind families with bonds of love and loyalty. I call upon you.
Bless this home and all who gather here. Guide me in wisdom, as you guided Oðinn. Grant me the strength of your steady presence, the compassion of your mothering heart.
Frigg, accept my honor!”
6. Offering (2 minutes)
Pour milk or wine, break bread:
“I offer you bread and milk, sustenance and comfort. Accept this gift as a symbol of the nourishment you bring to all families.”
7. Personal Prayer (5 minutes)
Speak from your heart about:
- Blessings for your family
- Challenges in relationships you wish to heal
- Wisdom you need to navigate transitions
- Gratitude for the safety of your home
Option: Tie a knot in thread or yarn while speaking, binding your intention
8. Closing (2 minutes)
“Frigg, I thank you for your presence. Your blessing remains upon this home and those I love. As I close this rite, your protection stays. So be it!”
Continued Practice
Keep the thread you tied at your altar as a reminder of Frigg’s presence. Light a candle for Frigg during family difficulties or transitions.
