Step 1: Initiating the Rite

The ritual leader speaks in soft, contemplative darkness

We gather in shadow and gentle darkness. All who come to understand what dwells in obscurity and mystery are welcome here.

All process deosil with careful, mindful steps

We honor Höðr, god of darkness and blindness, of hidden things and inner sight.

Step 2: Purification

Ritual Leader sprinkles water in darkness

As Höðr teaches us that darkness is not to be feared, so do we let go of our dread of what we cannot see. We stand ready to perceive the wisdom that hides in shadow.

Each person is blessed with cool water

Purified in darkness, we are ready.

Step 3: Honoring Earth Mother

All place hands on earth, feeling without seeing

Jörð, beneath the surface, in your deep places, Höðr dwells. You know darkness as surely as you know light. Bless this rite with the knowledge that comes from depth and darkness.

Step 4: Statement of Purpose

Ritual Leader speaks with quiet acceptance

We gather to honor Höðr, god of darkness and blindness. We come to understand what lies hidden, to seek his blessings on all who navigate life without sight and all who seek the wisdom of inner darkness.

We seek his gifts of inner sight, acceptance of limitation, and the knowledge that dwells in hidden places.

Step 5: (Re)Creating the Cosmos

The Fire

Ritual Leader lights fire, which casts shadows as much as it illuminates

From Muspelheim comes sacred flame—necessary even in darkness, casting shadows even in light. This fire balances brightness and darkness. Hail to the fire!

The Well

Ritual Leader pours water, its surface dark and reflective

Mimir’s Well shows nothing to blind sight, yet holds all truth. These waters teach that not all knowledge comes through eyes. Hail to the well!

The World Tree

Ritual Leader touches central pole in darkness

Yggdrasil’s roots are in darkness, Höðr’s domain. What is hidden feeds what grows above. Hail to the World Tree!

The Three Worlds

Through Höðr’s darkness, all worlds hold mystery and depth. Without darkness, there is no balance, no rest.

Step 6: Opening the Gates

Ritual Leader reaches out carefully in the darkness

Heimdallr, we call upon you! Open the gates for Höðr! The god of darkness approaches. Let the passage be clear even though we cannot see it.

Open the gates! Let the blind god pass!

Step 7: Inviting the Three Kindreds

The Ancestors

Come, honored ones! You who lived before electric light, who knew the deep darkness of night! Come and share in your knowledge.

The Nature Spirits

Come, spirits of cave and shadow, of underground and deep night! Come and celebrate your lord’s domain.

The Shining Ones

Come, all the Powers! And especially you, Höðr, god of darkness, come and know us as those who honor what dwells in shadow.

Step 8: Key Offerings to Höðr

The Invitation

Höðr! God of darkness, blind one, dweller in shadow! You who see without eyes, who know without light! Come to this rite and know that we understand the value of your domain.

Praise Offerings

Ritual Leader pours dark liquid into the earth or fire

For your acceptance of your own blindness with grace. For the wisdom that dwells in darkness and shadow. For the rest and peace that darkness brings. For the mystery you hold and protect. For your balance to the light that we celebrate at other times.

These praises and this offering we give to you, Höðr.

Formal Offering

Ritual Leader holds up primary offering in the darkness

We offer to you, Höðr, this gift of [choice offering such as dark beer, black bread, charcoal, or dark stone]. Accept it as a token of our respect for your domain and our acceptance of darkness as a necessary part of existence.

Offering is placed or buried

Step 9: Prayer of Sacrifice

We understand that Höðr teaches us that loss and limitation are real, that not everything can be overcome. We offer now, understanding that acceptance of what we cannot change is its own form of wisdom.

Accept our offering, god of darkness. Help us accept our limitations with grace. Bless us with the knowledge that blindness and darkness hold their own wisdom.

Step 10: Omen

Ritual Leader reads the omen by touch or by feeling rather than seeing

Höðr, what hidden thing does your darkness reveal? What mystery speaks to us from shadow?

The omen is read with attention to what is obscured or hidden

Step 11: Calling for Blessings

Höðr, we call upon your blessings! Bless us with acceptance of our limitations. Bless us with inner sight that does not depend on eyes. Bless us with the courage to navigate what is hidden.

Grant us the ability to find our way even in darkness. Grant us the wisdom that dwells in mystery. Grant us your blessing, that we might honor all parts of existence, light and dark alike.

Step 12: Hallowing the Blessing

Ritual Leader marks each person in the darkness, trusting touch

By Höðr’s acceptance, may you be blessed. His inner sight dwells within you. His knowledge of darkness guides you. His peace in obscurity flows through you.

We are blessed. We see without sight. We accept.

Step 13: Affirmation of the Blessing

We accept Höðr’s blessings this day. We pledge to honor darkness as a necessary part of existence. We pledge to accept our limitations with grace.

By the blessing of Höðr, god of darkness and inner sight, we are made wise in shadow-knowing this day and all our days.

Step 14: Workings

Community may perform workings for accepting limitations, inner sight, or finding peace in darkness

Now is the time for any workings. Call upon Höðr’s power to help you find your way through darkness with grace.

Step 15: Thanking the Beings

We thank Höðr, god of darkness, for his presence and his teaching.

We thank all the Shining Ones.

We thank the Nature Spirits and the Ancestors.

Step 16: Closing the Gates

Ritual Leader lowers arms in darkness

Heimdallr, we thank you for the open passage. Close now the gates between the worlds. Darkness remains eternal.

The gates are closed. The passage is sealed.

Step 17: Thanking Earth Mother

Jörð, thank you for holding this rite in your depths. We return to you what is left.

Thank you, Earth Mother.

Step 18: Closing the Rite

Ritual Leader places hands gently together

The rite is complete. Höðr’s blessing of acceptance and inner sight settles into us. Darkness is no longer something to fear.

Go forth with peace in darkness. The blessing endures.

The rite is ended. The blessing continues.
