Blót to Hel: Honoring the Queen of Endings
Hel is the queen of the Norse underworld, neither fully alive nor dead. This ritual honors her necessary role and seeks her blessing for acceptance of endings, passage, and transformation.
Preparation
Gather: Black or grey candle, water, wine or ale, bread, symbols of things ending or changing
The Ritual
1. Opening (1 minute)
“I kindle this flame for Hel, queen of the underworld, keeper of endings and transitions.”
2-3. Grounding & Purification (1 minute)
“Jörð, I honor the ground beneath, which holds all that has passed. I cleanse myself of fear of endings.”
4. Calling the Kindreds (1 minute)
“Ancestors, spirits, Shining Ones—I honor Hel, the Hidden One!”
5. Invocation (2 minutes)
“Hel, Queen of the Underworld! Neither living nor dead, you hold the threshold between worlds. I honor your necessary role and your dignity.
Grant me acceptance of what must end. Guide me through passages and transitions. Help me release what no longer serves.”
6. Offering (1 minute)
Pour wine and speak:
“I offer you wine, dark as the soil. Accept this gift.”
7. Personal Prayer (3 minutes)
Ask Hel for:
- Acceptance of death and endings
- Safe passage through transitions
- Transformation and renewal
- Respect for what has been
8. Closing (1 minute)
“Hel, I thank you. Endings lead to beginnings. So be it!”
