Step 1: Initiating the Rite

We gather where the veils grow thin, where the living and the dead meet. All who come with respect for the mysteries of death are welcome here.

All process deosil slowly, with reverent gravity

We honor Hel, goddess of the underworld, keeper of the honored dead, queen of Niflheim.

Step 2: Purification

Ritual Leader sprinkles water in stillness

As Hel holds all souls with equality and respect, so do we let go of fear and resentment. We stand at peace with the cycle of life and death.

Each person is blessed with water

Purified in acceptance, we are ready.

Step 3: Honoring Earth Mother

All place hands and foreheads to earth

Jörð, you who hold the dead in your embrace as surely as the living! Your soil receives all bodies. We honor you for this sacred trust. Bless this rite with the peace of the depths.

Step 4: Statement of Purpose

Ritual Leader speaks with grave respect

We gather to honor Hel, goddess of death and the underworld. We come to acknowledge the dignity of the dead and to seek her blessings on all who have passed and all who grieve.

We seek her gifts of acceptance, peace with mortality, and honor for those who have gone before.

Step 5: (Re)Creating the Cosmos

The Fire

Ritual Leader lights fire with solemn care

From Muspelheim comes sacred flame—warming the living in the cold of Hel’s domain. This fire marks the boundary between life and death. Hail to the fire!

The Well

Ritual Leader pours water dark and deep

Mimir’s Well flows even into Hel’s realm. These waters carry memory of all who have lived and died. Hail to the well!

The World Tree

Ritual Leader touches central pole with reverence

Yggdrasil’s roots reach deep into Niflheim, where Hel reigns. The tree connects all living to all dead. Hail to the World Tree!

The Three Worlds

Hel rules the underworld where all must eventually come. Her domain is the necessary counterpart to all that lives above.

Step 6: Opening the Gates

Ritual Leader stands with head bowed respectfully

Heimdallr, we call upon you! Open the gates to Hel’s domain! The queen of the underworld’s blessing is sought. Let the passage be clear.

The Ancestors

Come, honored dead! You who dwell in Hel’s care! Come and share in this rite. We remember you with love and respect.

The Nature Spirits

Come, spirits of deep places! Spirits of stone and root and ancient darkness! Come and celebrate your realm and your lady.

The Shining Ones

Come, all the Powers! And especially you, Hel, queen of the underworld, come and know us as those who honor the cycle of death.

Step 8: Key Offerings to Hel

The Invitation

Hel! Queen of the underworld, keeper of the honored dead, compassionate holder of all souls! You who rule with justice and equality! Come to this rite and know the respect we bear for your necessary domain.

Praise Offerings

Ritual Leader pours dark liquid or scattered herbs into the earth

For your just and equal rule over all who have passed. For your compassionate care of the dead. For the honor and dignity you grant to all souls. For your acceptance of all, noble and poor alike. For your patience and your eternal presence.

These praises and this offering we give to you, Hel.

Formal Offering

Ritual Leader holds up primary offering

We offer to you, Hel, this gift of [choice offering such as water, bread, dark drink, or stone]. Accept it as a token of our respect for your realm and our acceptance of the cycle of death.

Offering is buried or poured into the earth

Step 9: Prayer of Sacrifice

We understand that Hel teaches us that death is not the end but a transformation, a necessary part of the great cycle. We offer now, understanding that life gains meaning from mortality.

Accept our sacrifice, compassionate queen. Help us accept the cycle of death with grace. Bless us with the knowledge that those we’ve lost are honored in your care.

Step 10: Omen

Ritual Leader reads the omen with attention to cycles and endings

Hel, what message comes from the realm of the dead? What do the ancestors wish to tell us?

The omen is read with focus on endings, transitions, and messages from beyond

Step 11: Calling for Blessings

Hel, we call upon your blessings! Bless us with peace in grieving. Bless our ancestors with honor and rest. Bless us with understanding of death’s place in life’s great cycle.

Grant us the acceptance to let go of those who have passed. Grant us the knowledge that death is not separation but transformation. Grant us your blessing, that we might honor both life and death.

Step 12: Hallowing the Blessing

Ritual Leader marks each person with earth or dark oil

By Hel’s acceptance, may you be blessed. Her peace flows through you. Her respect for all souls dwells within you. Her compassion guides you.

We are blessed. We accept. We honor the cycle.

Step 13: Affirmation of the Blessing

We accept Hel’s blessings this day. We pledge to honor those who have passed before us. We pledge to face death with grace and acceptance.

By the blessing of Hel, compassionate queen of the underworld, we are made wise in death-knowing this day and all our days.

Step 14: Workings

Community may perform workings for grieving, honoring the dead, or accepting loss

Now is the time for any workings. Call upon Hel’s power to help you accept and transform your grief.

We thank Hel, compassionate goddess, for her presence and her care of the dead.

We thank all the Shining Ones.

We thank the Nature Spirits and the Ancestors.

Step 16: Closing the Gates

Ritual Leader stands with bowed head

Heimdallr, we thank you for the open passage. Close now the gates to the underworld. Hel returns to her eternal realm.

The gates are closed. The passage is sealed.

Step 17: Thanking Earth Mother

Jörð, thank you for holding this rite, for bearing both the living and the dead. We return to you what is left.

Step 18: Closing the Rite

Ritual Leader places hands in prayer position

The rite is complete. Hel’s peace settles into acceptance. The cycle turns, and all things find their proper place.

Go forth with honor for those who have passed. The blessing of Hel remains.
