Step 1: Initiating the Rite

The ritual leader speaks with deep, maternal warmth

We gather upon the body of our mother. All who come to honor the earth that bears all life are welcome here.

All process deosil with gentle, grounded movements

We honor Jörð, the earth goddess, mother of all, foundation of all worlds.

Step 2: Purification

Ritual Leader sprinkles water and traces patterns in soil

As the earth receives all and purifies all, so do we let go of what separates us from wholeness. We stand as children of the earth, pure in that connection.

Each person is blessed with earth or water

Purified by earth’s own renewal, we are ready.

Step 3: Honoring Earth Mother

All kneel and place entire bodies as close to earth as possible

Jörð! You are the one we honor! You are the foundation, the mother, the eternal embrace! Bless this rite that gathers upon your body.

Hail, Earth Mother! We are yours.

Step 4: Statement of Purpose

Ritual Leader speaks with reverent tenderness

We gather to honor Jörð, the earth goddess, mother of all that lives, foundation of all existence. We come to celebrate our connection to the land and to seek her blessings on all we do.

We seek her gifts of fertility, stability, and the deep knowing that we are part of her eternal cycle.

Step 5: (Re)Creating the Cosmos

The Fire

Ritual Leader lights fire upon the earth itself

From Muspelheim comes sacred flame—given place upon Jörð’s body. This fire represents all life that dwells within her. Hail to the fire!

The Well

Ritual Leader pours water into the soil

Mimir’s Well flows through Jörð’s veins as surely as blood flows through our own. These waters are her blessing. Hail to the well!

The World Tree

Ritual Leader touches the central pole deeply rooted

Yggdrasil’s roots drink deep of Jörð’s essence. All worlds rest upon her eternal body. Hail to the World Tree!

The Three Worlds

All Nine Worlds rest upon Jörð’s back. She bears all existence with patient, eternal love.

Step 6: Opening the Gates

Ritual Leader places palms down on earth

Heimdallr, we call upon you! Open the gates that Jörð’s blessing may flow through this rite! We are already upon her body, already in her presence.

Open the gates! Let all blessing flow!

Step 7: Inviting the Three Kindreds

The Ancestors

Come, honored ones! You are formed of Jörð’s own body. You return to her with every breath. Come and share in her blessing.

The Nature Spirits

Come, spirits of field and forest, mountain and stream! You are all Jörð’s children! Come and celebrate your mother!

The Shining Ones

Come, all the Powers! You dwell because of Jörð! Come and honor her as the foundation of all.

Step 8: Key Offerings to Jörð

The Invitation

Jörð! Ancient mother, earth beneath our feet, foundation of all worlds! You who hold us always, who feed us from your own body! Come and know that we recognize and honor your infinite gift.

Praise Offerings

Ritual Leader pours grain or seeds into the earth

For your infinite patience and your eternal support. For the fertility that creates all life. For the stability that holds all worlds secure. For the nourishment you provide from your own body. For your unconditional love for all your children.

These praises and this offering we give to you, Jörð.

Formal Offering

Ritual Leader holds up primary offering

We offer to you, Jörð, this gift of [choice offering such as grain, seeds, compost, or biodegradable material]. Accept it as a return of what you have given us, a symbol of our gratitude and our commitment to honor all you provide.

Offering is buried in the earth

Step 9: Prayer of Sacrifice

We understand that all life requires sacrifice—the soil requires death to create new life, the old must fall to feed the new. We offer now, understanding that we are all part of Jörð’s eternal cycle of transformation.

Accept our offering, eternal mother. Help us live in gratitude for all you provide. Bless us with the knowledge that we are always held and always part of you.

Step 10: Omen

Ritual Leader reads the omen with attention to growth and cycles

Jörð, what message comes from the earth itself? What does your body wish to tell us?

The omen is read with focus on grounding and natural cycles

Step 11: Calling for Blessings

Jörð, we call upon your blessings! Bless us with stability and grounding. Bless our endeavors with the fertility that comes from right relationship with you. Bless our lives with the knowledge of belonging.

Grant us the ability to honor and care for the earth as you care for us. Grant us the strength that comes from being rooted in you. Grant us your blessing, that we might walk always as your children.

Step 12: Hallowing the Blessing

Ritual Leader marks each person with earth from the ground

By Jörð’s blessing, may you be blessed. Her fertility flows through you. Her stability grounds you. Her love surrounds you.

All respond

We are blessed. We are grounded. We are hers.

Step 13: Affirmation of the Blessing

We accept Jörð’s blessings this day. We pledge to honor the earth and all her gifts. We pledge to live in right relationship with the land that sustains us.

By the blessing of Jörð, our eternal mother, we are made whole and grounded this day and all our days.

Step 14: Workings

Community may perform workings for grounding, fertility, or environmental healing

Now is the time for any workings. Call upon Jörð’s power to ground your intentions and help them take root.

Step 15: Thanking the Beings

We thank Jörð, eternal mother, for her infinite blessing and support.

We thank all the Shining Ones who dwell upon her.

We thank the Nature Spirits and the Ancestors.

Step 16: Closing the Gates

Ritual Leader stands with feet firmly planted

Heimdallr, we thank you. We need no closing of gates—we are already home upon Jörð’s body, in her eternal care.

The gates remain as they are—always open, always welcoming.

Step 17: Thanking Earth Mother

Jörð, thank you. We are always grateful for your endless giving. Thank you for holding this rite, for holding us always.

Thank you, Earth Mother. Thank you.

Step 18: Closing the Rite

Ritual Leader lies down upon the earth briefly, then rises

The rite is complete. We are still upon Jörð, still held by her, still part of her eternal being.

Go forth knowing you are always home, always held, always loved by the earth itself.

The rite is ended. The blessing is eternal.
