Step 1: Initiating the Rite

The ritual leader speaks softly in the gathering darkness

As stars emerge and darkness falls, we gather in quietness. The night brings its own wisdom. All who come in peace and contemplation are welcome.

All process deosil slowly, quietly, in gentle dimness

We honor Mani, the moon god, master of night and dreams, keeper of the tides of heart and mind.

Step 2: Purification

Ritual Leader sprinkles water in the moonlight or candlelight

As moonlight reflects and softens all it touches, so do we let go of harsh judgment. We stand gentle and open beneath the night sky.

Each person is blessed with cool water

Purified and gentle, we are ready.

Step 3: Honoring Earth Mother

All place hands on earth in reverence

Jörð, beneath the stars you rest in peaceful darkness. Mani’s light guides travelers across your surface. We thank you for holding us through the long night. Bless this rite with the peace of moonlight and dreams.

Step 4: Statement of Purpose

Ritual Leader speaks with quiet intention

We gather to honor Mani, the moon god, who lights the night and rules the tides. We come to offer thanks for dreams and visions, to seek his blessings on our inner journeys and our growing understanding.

We seek his gifts of intuition, peace, and the wisdom that comes in quiet and in dreams.

Step 5: (Re)Creating the Cosmos

The Fire

Ritual Leader lights candles or the central fire softly

From Muspelheim comes sacred flame—gentle and mysterious as moonlight, holding shadows and secrets. This fire illuminates the inner landscape. Hail to the fire!

The Well

Ritual Leader pours water, creating mirror-like reflections

Mimir’s Well reflects the moon’s face, eternal and changing. In these waters dreams are born and mysteries revealed. Hail to the well!

The World Tree

Ritual Leader gestures upward to the night

Yggdrasil stands rooted in darkness, its crown touching stars. Mani rides through its branches, his light touching each leaf and each creature. Hail to the World Tree!

The Three Worlds

Through Mani’s nightly journey, all worlds are connected. Asgard dreams its dreams. Midgard rests and dreams. Helheim’s denizens know his light.

Step 6: Opening the Gates

Ritual Leader raises hands to the stars

Heimdallr, watcher of the night, guardian of all passages! We call upon you to open the gates. Let Mani approach with his gentle light and bring the Powers through to join us.

Open the gates! Let the moon god come!

Step 7: Inviting the Three Kindreds

The Ancestors

Come, honored ones! You who watched the moon rise over countless nights. You who found guidance in her light. Come and share in our rite.

The Nature Spirits

Come, creatures of the night! Spirits of moonlight and shadow, of dream and mystery! Come and celebrate your lord’s arrival.

The Shining Ones

Come, all the Powers! And especially you, Mani, moon god, come and know us as your people.

Step 8: Key Offerings to Mani

The Invitation

Mani! Gentle one, moon god, keeper of tides and dreams! You who ride the night sky eternal, your face changing yet never truly changing! Come to this rite and know the love and respect we bear you.

Praise Offerings

Ritual Leader pours milk or honey water into the night

For your constant journey through the darkness. For the dreams and visions you bring. For the tides you rule and the rhythms you teach. For the gentle light that guides us through the night. For the mysteries you hold and the wisdom of the moon.

These praises and this offering we give to you, Mani.

Formal Offering

Ritual Leader holds up primary offering

We offer to you, Mani, this gift of [choice offering such as milk, white bread, silver, or white flowers]. Accept it as a token of our devotion and our gratitude for your constant vigil.

Offering is placed at altar or beneath moonlight

Step 9: Prayer of Sacrifice

We understand that Mani gives his attention to every corner of the world each night. We offer now, understanding that constancy and attention are sacred gifts.

Accept our sacrifice, moon god. Help us be attentive to the dreams that guide us. Bless us with the wisdom of night and the knowledge of the inner worlds.

Step 10: Omen

Ritual Leader reads the omen in the candlelight or by starlight

Mani, what dreams come for us? What hidden things do you wish to reveal?

The omen is read with attention to its subtle meanings

Step 11: Calling for Blessings

Mani, we call upon your blessings! Bless us with peaceful sleep and vivid dreams. Bless our intuition and inner sight. Bless our hearts with gentle peace.

Grant us the ability to understand the messages of our dreams. Grant us the wisdom to live by the cycles you teach. Grant us your blessing, that we might be guided by your gentle light.

Step 12: Hallowing the Blessing

Ritual Leader marks each person’s forehead with cool oil or water

By Mani’s gentle touch, may you be blessed. His light dwells within you. His dreams guide you. His peace surrounds you.

All respond

We are blessed. We are dreaming. We are guided.

Step 13: Affirmation of the Blessing

We accept Mani’s blessings this day. We pledge to honor our dreams and listen to their messages. We pledge to live in harmony with the cycles and rhythms he teaches.

By the blessing of Mani, moon god and dream-giver, we are made wise in night-knowing this day and all our days.

Step 14: Workings

Community may perform workings for dreams, inner sight, intuition, or peaceful sleep

Now is the time for any workings. Call upon Mani’s gentle power to illuminate your intention.

Step 15: Thanking the Beings

We thank Mani, moon god, for his presence and his guidance.

We thank all the Shining Ones.

We thank the Nature Spirits and the Ancestors.

Step 16: Closing the Gates

Ritual Leader lowers hands slowly

Heimdallr, we thank you for the open passage. Close now the gates between the worlds. The moon god continues his eternal journey.

The gates are closed. The passage is sealed.

Step 17: Thanking Earth Mother

Jörð, thank you for holding this rite in the darkness, for keeping us safe while we dream. We return to you what is left.

Thank you, Earth Mother.

Step 18: Closing the Rite

Ritual Leader places hands gently over heart

The rite is complete. The moon continues her journey. Dreams and visions settle softly into our hearts.

Mani’s blessings remain with us through the night and beyond. Go forth in peace and deep knowing.
