Step 1: Initiating the Rite

We gather where wind and water meet. The breath of life stirs around us. All who seek the gifts of wind and wealth are welcome in this rite.

We honor Njord, god of winds and waves, wealth and prosperity, master of sailors and shore.

Step 2: Purification

Ritual Leader sprinkles salt water with wind-like gestures

As the sea wind clears away all stagnation, so do we let the air sweep us clean. We stand fresh and light, ready to receive Njord’s gifts.

Purified by salt and wind, we stand ready.

Step 3: Honoring Earth Mother

All face the earth with arms spread wide

Jörð, foundation beneath all things, you who touch the sea and border the winds! Njord honors your boundaries and your gifts. We thank you for holding all waters and winds within your care. Bless this rite.

Step 4: Statement of Purpose

Ritual Leader speaks with flowing sincerity

We gather to honor Njord, god of winds and seas, lord of prosperity and peaceful trade. We come to celebrate his gifts of abundance and his dominion over the elements.

We seek his blessings for safe passage, prosperity, and the wealth that comes from right living and fair dealing.

Step 5: (Re)Creating the Cosmos

The Fire

Ritual Leader lights fire, tending it with flowing movements

From Muspelheim comes sacred flame—fanned by Njord’s own winds, warming all that is touched by his domains. Hail to the fire!

The Well

Ritual Leader pours salt water with undulating grace

Mimir’s Well holds all the salt waters and fresh waters of the worlds. These waters flow from Njord’s domain. Hail to the well!

The World Tree

Ritual Leader gestures upward with flowing arms

Yggdrasil’s branches sway in Njord’s winds, its roots drink deep of his waters. All life flows through these paths that Njord knows so well. Hail to the World Tree!

The Three Worlds

Through Njord’s domain, all worlds are connected by winds and waters. Trade flows through his blessing. Ships sail safely when he smiles.

Step 6: Opening the Gates

Ritual Leader opens arms to receive the wind

Heimdallr, watchful one, open the gates for Njord! The sea god approaches, bringing the winds of fortune. Let the passage be clear.

Open the gates! Let the wealth-bringer pass!

Step 7: Inviting the Three Kindreds

The Ancestors

Come, honored ones! You who sailed the waters and built your prosperity through trade and seafaring! Your legacy of wandering and trading guides us still.

The Nature Spirits

Come, spirits of wave and wind, of seabird and sea-spray! Come and celebrate your lord’s power and dominion.

The Shining Ones

Come, all the Powers! And especially you, Njord, lord of wind and sea, come and know us as your people.

Step 8: Key Offerings to Njord

The Invitation

Njord! Wind-lord, sea-father, god of prosperity and fair winds! You who rule the domain between land and sea, between wealth and want! Come to this rite and know the respect and love we bear you.

Praise Offerings

Ritual Leader pours ale or honey wine upon the ground

For the winds you bring, that fill sails and clear the air. For the seas you rule, that give life and livelihood. For the wealth and prosperity you grant to your people. For your protection of sailors and those who travel. For your fair dealings and your gift of peaceful trade.

These praises and this offering we give to you, Njord.

Formal Offering

We offer to you, Njord, this gift of [choice offering such as ale, sea salt, coins, or ship model]. Accept it as a symbol of our gratitude for your wealth and your blessing upon our travels and endeavors.

Ritual Leader reads the omen with attention to movement and flow

Njord, what fortunes approach? What winds blow for us? What prosperity do you bring?

The omen is read with focus on opportunities and travel

Step 11: Calling for Blessings

Njord, we call upon your blessings! Bless our travels with safe passage and fair winds. Bless our efforts with prosperity and wealth. Bless our dealings with honesty and fairness.

Grant us the freedom that comes with abundance. Grant us clear skies and favorable winds for all our endeavors. Grant us your blessing, that we might prosper as you wish.

Step 12: Hallowing the Blessing

Ritual Leader marks each person with salt water or oil

By Njord’s blessing, may you be blessed. The winds of fortune blow toward you. The tides of prosperity flow your way. Safety travels with you.

We are blessed. We are prosperous. We are favored.

Step 13: Affirmation of the Blessing

We accept Njord’s blessings this day. We pledge to deal fairly and honestly in all our endeavors. We pledge to use our prosperity for the good of our people.

By the blessing of Njord, god of winds and wealth, we are made prosperous this day and all our days.

Step 14: Workings

Community may perform workings for travel safety, prosperity, or successful trade

Now is the time for any workings. Call upon Njord’s power to bring fair winds to your intentions.

Step 16: Closing the Gates

Ritual Leader lowers arms to sides smoothly

Heimdallr, we thank you for the open passage. Close now the gates between the worlds. The winds return to their domains.

The gates are closed. The passage is sealed.

Step 17: Thanking Earth Mother

Jörð, thank you for holding this rite, for bearing all winds and waters. We return to you what is left.

Thank you, Earth Mother.

Step 18: Closing the Rite

The rite is complete. The winds settle, the waves return to their rhythm. Njord’s blessings remain with us.
