Step 1: Initiating the Rite

We gather where the sea meets land, where danger and beauty dance together. All who come with respect for the wild ocean and her ways are welcome here.

All process deosil with flowing, wave-like movements

We honor Ran, goddess of the sea, keeper of the drowned, net-caster of fate.

Step 2: Purification

Ritual Leader sprinkles salt water with undulating grace

As the sea cleans and restores what is washed by her tides, so do we let all that is worn away be renewed. We stand fluid and adaptable, ready to receive Ran’s wild blessing.

Each person is blessed with salt water

Purified by salt and tide, we are ready.

Step 3: Honoring Earth Mother

All kneel at the boundary between earth and water

Jörð, even you meet the sea at your edges. Ran rules these boundaries with her own authority. We thank you both for holding us between. Bless this rite with the power of both water and earth.

Step 4: Statement of Purpose

Ritual Leader speaks with respect and slight trepidation

We gather to honor Ran, goddess of the sea and the drowned. We come to acknowledge the power and mystery of the ocean, to seek her blessings on all who travel upon her waters and all who rest within her depths.

We seek her gifts of respect for the wild, understanding of fate, and safe passage through all waters.

Step 5: (Re)Creating the Cosmos

The Fire

Ritual Leader lights fire that glows like light on water

From Muspelheim comes sacred flame—reflected in the waves, warming the cold sea. This fire shows the dance between fire and water. Hail to the fire!

The Well

Ritual Leader pours salt water with flowing movements

Mimir’s Well flows even into the sea. All waters are connected through the great depths. Hail to the well!

The World Tree

Ritual Leader gestures to central pole as if ocean currents swirl around it

Yggdrasil stands as all waters flow around it. Ran knows every current and every depth. Hail to the World Tree!

The Three Worlds

Through Ran’s domain, all worlds touch the great seas. Her power flows deep and beyond sight.

Step 6: Opening the Gates

Ritual Leader opens arms to the tides

Heimdallr, we call upon you! Open the gates for Ran! The sea goddess approaches with her net and her mysteries. Let the passage be clear.

Open the gates! Let the wave-walker pass!

Step 7: Inviting the Three Kindreds

The Ancestors

Come, honored dead who dwell in Ran’s realm! You who rest in her arms! Come and share in this rite. We remember you.

The Nature Spirits

Come, spirits of wave and current, of shell and scale! Come and celebrate your lady’s wild power!

The Shining Ones

Come, all the Powers! And especially you, Ran, goddess of the sea, come and know us as those who honor your wild domain.

Step 8: Key Offerings to Ran

The Invitation

Ran! Sea goddess, wild one, keeper of all that dwells in deep places! You who cast your net to catch what the ocean gives! Come to this rite and know the respect we bear for your power and your mysteries.

Praise Offerings

Ritual Leader casts grains or flowers into the water or pours salt water

For your power that shapes all coasts and currents. For your mystery that keeps us ever curious. For your wild beauty that cannot be tamed. For your care of all who rest within your depths. For the abundance you provide to those who respect you.

These praises and this offering we give to you, Ran.

Formal Offering

Ritual Leader holds up primary offering

We offer to you, Ran, this gift of [choice offering such as salt, seafood, shells, silver, or bread cast to the sea]. Accept it as a token of our respect for your power and our commitment to respect all wild things.

Step 9: Prayer of Sacrifice

We understand that Ran teaches that fate is not always gentle, that the sea takes as surely as it gives. We offer now, understanding that respect for wild power means accepting what we cannot control.

Accept our offering, wild goddess. Help us respect what is beyond our control. Bless all who journey upon your waters.

Step 10: Omen

Ritual Leader reads the omen with attention to currents and depths

Ran, what do your nets bring us? What fate do you cast our way?

The omen is read with focus on destiny and wild forces

Step 11: Calling for Blessings

Ran, we call upon your blessings! Bless all who travel your waters with safety and success. Bless us with respect for wild things. Bless our journeys with favorable currents.

Grant us the wisdom to respect the ocean’s power. Grant us safe passage through all waters. Grant us your blessing, that we might navigate life’s currents with grace.

Step 12: Hallowing the Blessing

Ritual Leader marks each person with salt water

By Ran’s blessing, may you be blessed. Her respect for wild power flows through you. Her connection to deep mysteries dwells within you. Her care of all who journey dwells with you.

We are blessed. We are safe. We are respected.

Step 13: Affirmation of the Blessing

We accept Ran’s blessings this day. We pledge to respect wild things and the power we cannot control. We pledge to honor those who journey upon dangerous waters.

By the blessing of Ran, goddess of the sea and fate, we are made wise in ocean-knowing this day and all our days.

Step 14: Workings

Community may perform workings for safe travel, respect for the wild, or acceptance of fate

Now is the time for any workings. Call upon Ran’s power to guide you through life’s currents and depths.

Ritual Leader lowers arms slowly

Heimdallr, we thank you for the open passage. Close now the gates between the worlds. Ran returns to her depths.

The gates are closed. The passage is sealed.

Step 17: Thanking Earth Mother

Jörð, thank you for holding this rite at the boundary of all things. We return to you what is left.

Thank you, Earth Mother.

Step 18: Closing the Rite

Ritual Leader stands at ease, facing the water

The rite is complete. Ran’s blessing of respect and safe passage settles into us. The sea continues her eternal work.
