Samhain: The Festival of the Honored Dead

Date: October 31 - November 1
Season: Samhain marks the Celtic new year and the threshold between the bright half and the dark half of the year. In ADF Norse tradition, this is a time of deep connection with the Ancestors.

ADF Core Order of Ritual (Samhain Adaptation)

1. Musical Call & Initiating the Rite

A horn sounds, or a bell rings three times—calling all present to sacred space.

“Hear us, spirits and ancestors! We gather at the thinning veil, where summer fades to winter’s grip. We kindle this fire in honor of those who have gone before, whose bones lie beneath Midgard’s soil.”

2. Purification of Sacred Space & Participants

Fire Purification (smoking with mugwort or juniper): Pass the smoke around the fire-circle deosil (sunwise).

Water Purification (sacred well or bowl): Each person sprinkles water upon themselves or dips fingers in the well while speaking: “By water, as by time itself, I am cleansed and made ready.”

3. Honoring the Earth Mother

Pour the first libation into the earth:

“Jörð, Mother of all that dwells upon and within your body, we thank you for the gifts of summer’s harvest, for the fertile soil that has nourished us. Accept our gratitude and our gift, as we stand at the threshold of the dark half of the year.”

4. Statement of Purpose

“We gather on this threshold night to honor those who have passed before us. Samhain opens the gates of death, and through them walks the memory of ancestors. We call to them across the fire, knowing that this night, the veil between the living and the dead grows thin. To ancestors, we give reverence. To kinship of blood and choice, we reaffirm our bonds. Through death’s gate, we remember: we too shall pass, and our own deeds in this life will be remembered by those who come after.”

5. (Re)Creating the Sacred Cosmos

The Sacred Well (center, with water or mead):

“At the heart of all worlds flows the Well of Hvergelmir, source of all waters, all life, all time.”

The Fire (to the south, or closest):

“From Muspelheim the fire burns, warming the heart of all creation, burning away what must be burned, illuminating the darkness of ignorance.”

Yggdrasil (the pillar or central point, or the sacred space itself):

“Yggdrasil, the World Ash, holds all Nine Worlds in its branches and roots. Through its trunk pass all souls, from birth to death to rebirth. Tonight, we honor the paths of the dead who have traveled beyond.”

6. Opening the Gates (Bifröst / Heimdallr Invocation)

Ring the bell or sound the horn three times.

“Heimdallr, the Bright One, Watchman of the Rainbow Bridge, Guardian of the gates between the worlds—we ask your permission to cross the threshold, to reach toward the Ancestors. As Bifröst connects Asgard to Midgard, so too do we bridge the gap between the living and the dead. Heimdallr, grant us safe passage!”

Gesture toward the fire, opening it deosil.

7. Inviting the Three Kindreds

A. Nature Spirits (Landvættir & House-Wights)

“Spirits of this land, the vættir dwelling in stone and stream, in tree and soil—we honor you and ask for your blessing on this rite. Tomte of the hearth, Nisse of the barn, wights of field and forest—accept our offer and guard us well.”

Offer bread, honey-cakes, or grain to the four quarters or a central point.

B. Ancestors (Ancestors of Blood & Spirit)

“Ancestors, shades of those we knew and loved, and those whose names we have forgotten—we feel your presence tonight. The veil grows thin, and we call to you. We honor your memory, celebrate your deeds, and ask your blessing and guidance upon us. Join us now at this sacred fire!”

Speak the names of ancestors who have passed. Pour a libation of mead or ale.

C. Shining Ones (Æsir & Vanir)

“Mighty Oðinn, All-Father and Lord of Death, hear us! Thórr, Protector of Midgard, watch over us! Freyja, noble and wise, who receives half of the honored dead—be present in our rite. Æsir and Vanir, gods and goddesses of the Northern realms, we welcome you to our fire!”

Offer mead to the deities.

8. Key Deity Invocation & Lore: Oðinn as Lord of the Dead

“We call especially upon Oðinn, the All-Father, the One-Eyed God who once hung upon Yggdrasil for nine nights to gain wisdom. Oðinn is the god of death and magic, the lord of the slain, the keeper of the Word-Hoard. It is Oðinn who guides the shades of the dead and who understands the mysteries that lie beyond the veil.”

Tell the story of Oðinn’s sacrifice—his hanging on Yggdrasil, his retrieval of the runes, his mastery of death and transformation.

9. Main Sacrifice (Blót)

Each person at the rite approaches the fire and makes an offering, speaking the name of an ancestor and a gift offered:

“[Name of ancestor], I offer you [ale/mead/bread/favorite food]—remembering your [deeds/kindness/wisdom]. May you rest well beyond the veil, and may your blessing remain with us.”

Burn small wooden rune-staves or herb bundles inscribed with the names of the dead, or pour liquid offerings.

10. The Omen (Runecasting)

Cast three runes into a cloth or onto the ground.

The first rune speaks to the Ancestors’ Message for the living.
The second rune speaks to Our Challenge as we enter the dark half.
The third rune speaks to The Gift the ancestors offer.

Interpret the runes aloud for all present.

11. Calling and Hallowing the Blessing (Bragi’s Cup / Mead)

Pass a horn or cup of mead around the circle, deosil.

Each person speaks a blessing or makes a vow as they drink:

“I drink to the memory of [ancestor/ancestors], and I vow to carry forward their [virtue/wisdom/strength]. May their memory be a flame that does not dim.”

12. Affirmation of the Blessing

All together:

“What we have called, we have honored. What we have offered, has been received. The ancestors walk among us tonight, and their blessing flows through our veins and into our deeds. So be it!”

13. Working of Magic (Optional: Divination or Personal Wards)

This is an especially potent time for personal divination work, sigil-making for protection, or journaling reflections on ancestors’ lessons.

14. Thanking the Kindreds & Closing the Gates

Ring the bell three times.

“Ancestors, we thank you for your presence and your guidance. Return now to the spirit-lands beyond the veil, knowing you are held in memory and love.

Shining Ones, gods and goddesses, we thank you for your blessing. Depart now in peace.

Spirits of this land, wights and dwellers of soil and stone, we thank you. Guard this place and these people.

Heimdallr, we thank you for holding open the bridge between the worlds. Close now the gates behind us, sealing us safely in Midgard once more.”

Gesture to close the gates counter-deosil.

15. Thanking the Earth Mother & Final Benediction

“Jörð, patient Mother, we thank you for bearing us and blessing us. We give back to your soil and ask your continued care as we pass through winter’s dark toward spring’s return.

May we carry the wisdom of the dead. May we honor the fire-spark of our ancestors that burns within us. May we meet again at next Samhain, and in the worlds beyond. Blessed be!”

Notes for Practitioners

Samhain is a threshold night. If working indoors, consider opening a window to the west (the direction of the dead in some traditions) or the north (winter).
Offerings to the dead may be left overnight or burned completely; never consume an offering meant for the ancestors.
Ancestor names spoken aloud at Samhain are said to strengthen the living connection; don’t be shy about naming the dead.
This rite can be adapted for solo practice by adjusting the pronouns and focusing the intensity inward.
