Step 1: Initiating the Rite

We gather where the grain grows golden. All who come seeking the gifts of fertile fields and growing abundance are welcome here.

All process deosil with fluid, swaying movements

We honor Sif, goddess of grain and harvest, of fertility and golden abundance.

Step 2: Purification

Ritual Leader brushes each person with grain or straw

As wind moves through grain, clearing away chaff, so do we let all that does not serve us fall away. We stand strong and pure, ready to receive Sif’s blessings.

Purified and renewed, we are ready.

Step 3: Honoring Earth Mother

All kneel and place hands on earth

Jörð, fertile mother, your soil brings forth grain and all growing things! Sif works with you to bring abundance to all. We thank you for your generosity. Bless this rite.

Step 4: Statement of Purpose

Ritual Leader speaks with warm sincerity

We gather to honor Sif, goddess of grain, golden-haired queen of the harvest. We come to celebrate the fertility of the earth and the abundance of the growing season.

We seek her blessings on our harvests, both literal and metaphorical, and on all our endeavors to grow and create abundance.

Step 5: (Re)Creating the Cosmos

The Fire

Ritual Leader lights fire with golden movements

From Muspelheim comes sacred flame—warm and nurturing like the summer sun that ripens grain. This fire brings growth and transformation. Hail to the fire!

The Well

Ritual Leader pours water gently over growing earth

Mimir’s Well holds the waters that nourish all growing things. These waters rise through roots and bring life to every plant. Hail to the well!

The World Tree

Ritual Leader gestures to the central pole

Yggdrasil stands in fields of grain, its trunk like the golden stalks that bow in the wind. All growing things derive their nature from this great tree. Hail to the World Tree!

The Three Worlds

Through Sif’s blessing, all worlds are fertile and abundant. The grain grows, the harvests ripen, and all beings are nourished.

Step 6: Opening the Gates

Heimdallr, we call upon you! Open the gates for Sif! The golden goddess approaches. Let the passage be clear.

Step 7: Inviting the Three Kindreds

The Ancestors

Come, honored ones! You who tended fields and harvested grain, who learned the cycles of growing and reaping! Come and share in our celebration of abundance.

The Nature Spirits

Come, spirits of growing things! Spirits of wheat and barley, of every plant that grows from Sif’s domains! Come and celebrate your lady.

The Shining Ones

Come, all the Powers! And especially you, Sif, golden goddess, come and know us as your grateful people.

Step 8: Key Offerings to Sif

The Invitation

Sif! Golden-haired goddess, queen of grain, lady of harvest and fertility! You whose hair of gold matches the ripened wheat! Come to this rite and know the love and gratitude we bear you.

Praise Offerings

Ritual Leader pours grain or honey upon the earth

For your golden beauty and your grace. For the fertility you bring to all fields. For the abundance of the harvest that sustains us. For your love of the growing season. For the joy that comes with harvest-time.

Step 12: Hallowing the Blessing

By Sif’s blessing, may you be blessed. Her fertility flows through you. Her abundance surrounds you. Her golden beauty shines in you.

Step 13: Affirmation of the Blessing

We accept Sif’s blessings this day. We pledge to tend the growing things in our care with love and attention. We pledge to give thanks for the harvests that sustain us.

By the blessing of Sif, goddess of grain and harvest, we are made fertile and abundant this day and all our days.

Step 14: Workings

Community may perform workings for growth, fertility, or successful harvest

Now is the time for any workings. Call upon Sif’s power to help your intentions grow and flourish.

Heimdallr, we thank you for the open passage. Close now the gates between the worlds. The grain goddess returns to her fields.

The gates are closed. The passage is sealed.

Step 17: Thanking Earth Mother

Jörð, thank you for holding this rite, for bearing all growth and abundance within yourself. We return to you what is left.

Step 18: Closing the Rite

Ritual Leader places hands together like stalks of grain

The rite is complete. The fields continue their growing work. Sif’s blessing ripens within us.

Go forth and tend what grows. The harvest awaits those who care for the growing things.
