Loki the Cunning
Loki is one of the most complex and controversial figures in Norse mythology. Though not technically a god by birth (he is a giant’s son), he is blood-brother to Oðinn and dwells among the Aesir. He is the god of mischief, cunning, deception, and transformation—both creative and destructive.
Sacred Story
Loki is a master shape-shifter, capable of changing his form at will. He has fathered monstrous offspring destined to play key roles in Ragnarök: the great wolf Fenrir, the world serpent Jörmungandr, and the death goddess Hel. His tricks range from amusing pranks on the gods to devastating deceptions—he tricked Höðr into killing Baldur and orchestrated the death of the poet Kvasir.
However, Loki also aided the gods: he helped retrieve Thor’s hammer Mjölnir, won the stallion Sleipnir for Oðinn, and assisted in securing the golden apples of Iðunn. When the gods captured him after Baldur’s death, they bound him with the entrails of his own son Narfi, with a serpent dripping venom on his face. There he remains until Ragnarök, when his bonds break and he sails to the final battle.

His worship requires honest acknowledgment of trickery, deceit, and paradox in human nature and the natural world. Blót to Loki involves clever words, wit, games of chance, and recognition of both the helpful and harmful aspects of cunning. He teaches that destruction and creation are often two sides of the same force.
