Jörð the Foundation
Jörð (literally “Earth”) is the primal mother upon whose body all life flourishes. Though sometimes counted among the Jotnar, Jörð is universally honored and necessary to all existence. In ADF liturgy, the acknowledgment and honoring of the Earth Mother is central to every rite, reflecting both practical wisdom (we stand upon her ground) and spiritual reality (all life depends upon her generosity).
Sacred Story
Jörð is the daughter of Night and the mother of Þórr. She is solid, patient, and generous beyond measure. In the depths of winter, she sleeps beneath snow and ice; in spring, she awakens and brings forth all growing things. At Ragnarok, she will sink into the sea, only to rise again, renewed, in the new world that follows.
ADF Devotion
Every ADF rite opens with the honoring of Earth Mother and closes with gratitude to her. She is the first kindred to receive respect in any working. Offerings to Jörð are returned to her soil—libations of water, ale, or mead poured into the earth; seeds or grains scattered; bread shared. Her gift to us is the very ground beneath our feet; our reciprocal gift is our gratitude, our stewardship, and our commitment to not waste what she freely gives.
