Ran the Taker
Ran is the goddess of the sea’s depths and of drowning. She is not evil, but rather a powerful force of nature—neither good nor bad, but primal and uncompromising. She takes what comes to her (including those who drown) and holds them in her realm beneath the waves.
Sacred Story
Ran is the wife of Aegir, a giant associated with the sea and brewing. She casts her net over the sea to catch fish and, according to some tales, to catch those who venture too far from safety. It is said that those who die at sea come into Ran’s keeping, and that treasures lost to the sea are held in her halls. She is not malevolent, but rather a representation of the sea’s awesome power and indifference to human desires.
ADF Devotion
In ADF practice, Ran is honored as a powerful force to be respected and negotiated with. Those who work on the sea make offerings to her for safe passage. She is invoked to help release and process grief—the loss of loved ones to the sea, the loss of treasures and opportunities, the transformation that comes through deep waters. Offerings include respectful approach to the sea, safety practices that show respect for her power, and willingness to accept loss as part of the cycle of existence.
