Sif the Golden
Sif is the Vanir goddess of harvest and fertile fields. Her golden hair is said to represent the ripened grain in summer sunlight. Though she is wife to Thor, she carries the Vanir blessing of fertility and agricultural abundance.
Sacred Story
Sif is famous for her beautiful golden hair, which was once cut off by Loki as a cruel joke. Thor was so angry that he threatened to break Loki’s bones, forcing the trickster to find a replacement. Loki obtained magical golden hair from the dwarves, which grew as real hair when placed on Sif’s head. This tale illustrates both the beauty of the harvest and the costs of restoration.
ADF Devotion
In ADF practice, Sif is honored for the blessings of harvest and the fertility of the fields. She is invoked during planting season to ensure good growth and at harvest time to give thanks for abundance. Offerings include the first fruits of the harvest, bread baked from grain, and gratitude expressed through sharing the bounty with community and those in need.
