Skaði the Huntress
Skaði is a goddess of winter, mountains, and the hunt. Though technically a giantess married into the Aesir, she is honored among the Vanir for her Vanir heritage and her role as a powerful force of nature. She represents independence, fierce competence, and the untamed wilderness.
Sacred Story
Skaði demanded compensation after her father Thrym was killed. She chose to marry one of the Aesir by looking at their feet alone (thinking she was choosing Baldr, but ending up with Njörðr instead). The marriage was unhappy because Skaði preferred the mountains while Njörðr loved the sea. They separated, each dwelling in their preferred realm, yet Skaði remains honored and her wilderness wisdom revered.
ADF Devotion
In ADF practice, Skaði is honored by hunters, mountain climbers, and those who work in wild places. She is invoked for winter survival skills, for independence and self-reliance, and for respect for the wild places and creatures of the earth. Offerings include time spent in mountains and wilderness, hunting done with respect and skill, and commitment to maintaining wild places and protecting the independence of those who choose solitary paths.
